Underwoods was founded in 1991 by Kerry Underwood.

Chambers Guide to the legal profession 2008 lists Underwoods as one of the leading employment and personal injury firms. About the firm it says:

Kerry Underwood is author of the best seller, No Win No Fee No Worries, and of Fixed Costs (2nd edition July 2006). He is editor of the Costs, Funding and Referral Fees section of Butterworths Personal Injury Litigation Service. He also conducts seminars for the University of Cambridge and the Law Society and contributes to radio, television and to legal journals. He is a former Chairman of Employment Tribunals and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Robert Males lectures for a number of concerns and is a member of the Civil Justice Council's Working Party on Fixed Costs, and is a fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. Robert Males was nominated as Best Trainer at the LawCareers.Net/Trainee Solicitors Group Awards 2005.

John Bartholomew has joined the firm as a partner in the Commercial Department specialising in all aspects of commercial property work as well as general business advice and tax planning for individuals..'
